Meet The Team

Russell Rafton

Surveyor and Owner

Russell is our senior surveyor for Dryfix Preservation Ltd. Russell started life in the construction industry at the tender age of 16 working for his father's business as an apprentice bricklayer. Achieving level three as a bricklayer and winning many awards along the way in competitions from some of York's most prestigious construction companies, Russell stayed at York College for a total of seven years undertaking his site management courses and HNC.

During his time at college Russell was introduced into the damp and timber preservation industry by his father which he obviously found interesting and quickly developed a thirst for more knowledge and started training with the PCA (Property Care Association) the industry's leading body. Russell Qualified as a C.S.R.T Surveyor in 2004 and has attended every course the PCA have to offer. Even though Russell has attended every relevant course he can still be seen down at the PCA headquarters in Huntingdon sitting refresher courses and developing his skills further. Russell also progressed his career further training with the National flood school in Surrey where again he achieved outstanding results in his examinations for fire and flood restoration, water damage repairs, mould cleaning and structural drying.

Russell continued his career in the construction industry before becoming a full time surveyor for a preservation firm in South Yorkshire. In 2008 Russell started Dryfix Preservation Ltd and now has Dryfix and his team established as Yorkshire’s leading damp and timber repairs specialists, serving councils, housing authorities, property management companies, estate agents and domestic clients, throughout York Harrogate and Scarborough. Russell no longer works with his hands as Dryfix has an employed team of tradesmen and remedial technicians so Russell's primary role is using his wealth of knowledge and experience surveying, producing high quality reports and managing contracts.

Russell thinks the success behind Dryfix is primarily down to knowledge, understanding your profession, producing high quality work and carrying out your work with enthusiasm. Russell lives in York and has more hobbies than he has spare time. As a qualified diver, boat cox and assistant instructor for York BSAC he can usually be found at weekends either by the coast or training. Russell also enjoys playing guitar, shooting and as a former scout leader has an appetite for anything outdoors which usually involves getting dirty.

Gillian Wilkinson

Dryfix Secretary & Admin

Gillian joined the Dryfix Team as a typist, transcribing surveyor’s dictations into beautifully edited reports back in January 2012. Since our services increased Gillian's role has grown too and in May Gillian joined the Admin Team managing the office full time. Gillian's role involves arranging appointments, surveys, looking after clients and our accounts. If you call or email the office between Monday - Friday you are most likely to speak to Gillian.

Gillian moved to North Yorkshire from Bradford last year with husband Andi and two rescue dogs, Jess and Alfie. Gillian and her husband have spent the last few years renovating their house, which was derelict when they bought it and had not been lived in for six years. With a little bit of creativity, positive thinking and a lot of effort, Gill’s house has been beautifully transformed and the renovation is almost complete.

Gillian's professional background is in insurance. Gillian worked as a claims team manager for Aviva in household claims, so she knows a lot about property repairs! Gillian and her husband also owned and ran their own post office for seven years until they sold it and moved to York last year.

Most of Gillian's spare time when she's not managing the office is spent either decorating the house or gardening which is her next big project this year. Gill plays golf and loves to read, which is helpful as we throw plenty of building reports her way, although I'm sure given the option she would rather read something else.

James Penrose

Dryfix - Bricklayer

James joined the Dryfix team in June 2012. James is another time served, apprentice trained and qualified Bricklayer who started his career in the construction industry with a local building contractor in York. Although he's quite shy and you have to occasionally provoke a response from him, James is hard working and his trowel skills are excellent often giving Alan his slightly older mentor a real good run for his money.

James’ key qualities are his time keeping and commitment to getting the job done, done correctly and to the highest possible standard, even if this does mean working long hours.

James is currently preparing for his PCA Technicians training course and hopes to be added to the list becoming another qualified remedial technician in early 2013. James also lives in York with his partner Robyn, although he has lived all over the UK and abroad in Australia.

James is also another gym fanatic like Fraser, Reece and Andi and can often be found at weekends either playing football or fishing.

Andrew Haigh

Dryfix - Plasterer

Andrew joined the Dryfix team almost at the start back in 2009 and is another time served apprentice trained plasterer. Andi's plastering like Reece's is by far the best you'll ever see and the company always receives positive comments on his high quality plastering by our customers. Andi is highly skilled in all aspects of plastering from rendering, skimming, boarding, cornicing and working with traditional lime renders.

Andi is the gentle giant of the family and always carries out his work with pride. You'll often hear Andi before you see him as he's renowned for being cheery and enthusiastic.

Andi's key skills besides his plastering is the ability to keep up moral when jobs are difficult and bring in work on schedule.

Andrew is also preparing this year to sit his Remedial Technicians training course with the PCA along with fellow colleagues James and Reece.

Andi lives in York with his wife Kerry and two children Reece and Poppy. There's obviously something strange in Dryfix world because Andi is another gym fanatic and can often be seen cycling on his road bike in his lycra shorts on an evening after work. Reece Bell

Dryfix - Plasterer

With Andrew, Reece joined the Dryfix team almost at the start back in 2009 and is another apprentice trained plasterer. Reece has undertaken his training with Andrew and naturally it shows because Reece's plastering is outstanding, it's so good we refer to it as mirror like!

Reece is one of the youngest members of our team only 21 although his plastering and trowel skills are incredible. Reece has excellent attention to detail and is skilled in traditional plastering and rendering as well as modern dry lining systems. Reece has a great personality and sense of humour and is always enthusiastic about his work. He is another member of the team that’s quite happy to work all day and extra hours to ensure the job gets brought in on schedule.

With James and Andi, Reece is also sitting his PCA Technicians Training course early this year to add to his existing skills and knowldege.

Reece also lives in York and again like the rest of the team enjoys spending his spare time in the gym, kick boxing and fishing. Reece is another Manchester United and sports fanatic and enjoys gaming online with his Xbox (when he has any spare time).

Jack Grange

Dryfix - Joiner

Jack is our newest recruit to the Dryfix team and also the youngest member within the company joining us in 2014. No surprise to learn however, that Jack is also a qualified level 3 joiner from York Technical College. Jack completed his apprenticeship with a joinery company working on large scale projects and building sites undertaking joinery specific tasks such as 1st fix and 2nd fix joinery, hanging doors, fitting skirting's and erecting roofs.

After completing his apprenticeship however, Jack wanted to broaden his knowledge within the building industry and was interested in the wide scope of our repairs.

When we were introduced to Jack missing the opportunity of another highly skilled, keen and hardworking joiner was out of the question and he was quickly introduced to the rest of the team.

Its not all good however, you see Jack's a Leeds United fan although these days doesn't shout about it much! But when he's not watching his team lose Jack can often be found playing snooker with other members of the Dryfix Crew.

Currently Jack lives at home with his parents although spends most of his time dining his girlfriend and driving around York in a distinguished purple Nissan Micra :)

Jacks very polite and very chatty so if he's working on your home, feel free to have a chat with him.

Stephen is punctual, hardworking, reliable and good at his job which as the new kid on the block earns him the respect from both his team mates and our clients.
