On Thursday evening I was lucky enough to be invited to York College to attend the Construction Awards Ceremony 2013. The Awards Ceremony is to celebrate outstanding performance from students studying a range of different construction skills in their respective fields; Carpentry and Joinery, Brickwork, Stonemasonry, Professional and Technical Studies, Electrical, Painting and Decorating and Plumbing. I was honoured to attend the Ceremony as one of the awards was being presented to a member of our staff Mr Fraser Rafton who's currently completing his second year in carpentry and joinery. Fraser was awarded best apprentice 2012 voted by the college tutors of York College.
The ceremony was on based on the theme of ‘Building Professionals - Crafting Excellence’ and this message was reinforced by the region’s employers who sponsored the individual awards.
The event began with a formal welcome by the Principal of York College, Dr Alison Birkinshaw, followed by the presentation of individual awards by Gary Edwards, Executive Director, Strategic Development Shepherd Construction Ltd.
Kevin Clancy, Head of Division for Construction at York College and who is actually one of my former college tutors back in the day, said: “This awards ceremony celebrates the excellent work by students and apprentices in the Construction Division at York College. I would like to congratulate all of the winners, their hard work will pay dividends when they become the future professionals within the construction industry. The College is very grateful to the many local construction industry sponsors for their continued support of this event.”
I am an avid believer in continuous development and professional education and believe when perusing a career in an industry so diverse as the construction and restoration professions we should never stop learning as the skills developed help us to achieve more satisfaction from our work in addition to allowing us to be the best we possibly can be.
Fraser is no stranger to continual professional development, he joined Dryfix in after its first year in business. Fraser quickly progressed through the ranks qualifying as a PCA Remedial Technician, Flood and Water Restoration Technician, Structural Drying Technician and Mould Technician and also now operates the water damage side of the business, so if you've had a flood or been unlucky enough to have had a leak, Fraser is the man you'll need onsite. In addition, to technical skills I also believe that no-one should be allowed to work within the industry practically unless they have a trade. A trade in my opinion forms the foundation of all the knowledge you need in the construction industry in addition to providing the knowledge and skills to be able to perform your trade to a professional level. This is why everyone who works form Dryfix will have both the technical skills learned through a trade and professional knowledge derived from continual education. Whilst obviously this level of training and education demands the highest level of commitment from ourselves as employers, and our employees it ensures we provide a high standard or workmanship and the best service possible.

Next time you’re looking for a damp and timber contractor, look around and ask; Are they full members of the Property Care Association? Are they Health and Safety approved contractors and not only are their technicians PCA trained but are they apprentice trained in a trade and have not just learned on the job?
