Toxic Mould - The Facts

7th January 2012

PCA members and representatives from the insurance, social housing and heritage sectors were among the audience at the recent mould seminar delivered by Caoimhín Connell.

The event, held at Huntingdon Racecourse, proved incredibly popular with over 100 attendees and saw forensic industrial hygienist Caoimhín Connell challenge claims - which are becoming increasingly widespread in the UK - over the perceived dangers posed by toxic mould.

Caoimhín ConnellCaoimhín, who has a background in analytical and environmental chemistry, travelled from Colorado in the US to deliver his presentation. Entitled ‘Recognition, Evaluation, Anticipation and Control of Indoor Moulds: Communicating the Facts’, Caoimhín’s talk included a biological introduction to moulds, as well as an insight into toxicology.

Caoimhín has an extensive background in the investigation, assessment and elimination of mould and his company - Forensic Applications Consulting Technologies (FACT) - is internationally recognised as an authority in indoor mould with more than 20 years of applying scientific practices and protocols to this growing issue. Further details about Caoimhím Connell are available at http://www.forensic-applications.com

The PCA was delighted with the success of the event and has received a lot of positive feedback from delegates who attended. Although, undoubtedly, there is a polarised opinion on the health effects of mould in buildings, Caoimhin’s talk brought an interesting perspective to the debate and reinforced the Association’s view that as it is dampness that causes the mould, this issue must be addressed rather than spending time and money on the effects of mould. After all, mould is a symptom of damp conditions.
