The balance between energy efficiency and ventilation

Most people in Britain are interested in finding new ways to increase the energy efficiency of their homes and spend less money on things like gas and home heating oil.
However, homeowners have been reminded to allow the water vapour that builds up during everyday tasks such as washing clothes and showering to escape, otherwise it can cause condensation and mould.
A study published earlier this month by the Mackintosh School of Architecture found three-quarters of the homes in surveyed had moisture levels that could lead to dust mite growth and trigger allergies.
Up to 30 per cent of this was due to drying laundry, something 87 per cent of people do in the winter.
UK trade body The Property Care Association told the Buckinghamshire Herald airtight designs and inadequate ventilation is making the problem worse.
General manager Steve Hodgson said it is important to get a healthy balance between letting fresh air in but not wasting money on heating.
“Solutions may be as simple as opening windows, installing mechanical ventilation, closing the bathroom door when showering and using the heating system effectively,” he added.
If condensation and mould persist though, it may be necessary to seek help on other methods of getting rid of it.
