  • You wouldn't wear this shirt would you? Poor atmospheric control within a property can lead to extensive mould growth affecting walls, ceilings, furnishings and even clothing.
  • You can understand why condensation and mould issues are such a problem in modern housing, because you wouldn\'t want to cook with these backing trays if every time you put them away they went mouldy!

  • Belongings are often affected by mould just as much as surfaces and furnishings.  Problems with condensation and mould can be difficult to resolve as often there maybe one or more contributory factors to the cause of the problem. Overcrowding of wardrobes in addition to their placement against cold north facing walls makes clothing and belongings more susceptible.
  • Another mouldy couch! Placing items of furniture against external walls particularly cold North facing walls will reduce air movement across the wall surfaces resulting in humid air been trapped between the wall and furnishings which can lead to the germination of moulds affecting both the wall and furniture. 
  • Extensive mould to structural timbers observed within a roof void. This is an ever increasing problem particularly with older properties where roof coverings have been replaced with  none breathable membranes dramatically reducing the breathability of the roof.  Furthermore our energy conscious society is contributing to the problem further by increasing levels of insulation accross ceilings   Condensation and mould is encouraged by the widespread use of insulating materials, central heating and double glazing. Along with the reduction in natural ventilation, the temperature differential between the dwelling areas and the old space is increased. The warm, internal air carrying high levels of water vapour is naturally drawn, by the process of convection, to the cold areas of the building including the roof void. Here, if there is insufficient ventilation, condensation occurs causing rotting timbers, decaying and weakening of metal fixings, felt damage and mould growth. Items stored in the loft are often rendered useless.
  • Mouldy back to a couch discovered in a property expressing severe issues with atmospheric moisture in York. 
  • Mouldy internal decorations observed in a 1950's property with front and rear external insulated cavity wall construction. Mould was noted to be affecting only an internal wall which divided a ground floor passage between themselves and a neighbouring building. The passage wall was constructed from 215mm solid brickwork and as such its thermal performance was poorer in comparison to the front and rear insulated cavity walls and had a lower internal surface temperature increasing its susceptibility to condensate and mould issues. 
  • Image taken of mouldy blinds in a York property suffering with a severe atmospheric imbalance and issues with condensation and mould.  
  • Images taken of a clients pair of pants which were stored in a clothes cupboard positioned on a North facing wall. The client not only had problems with mould affecting his clothes but also vulnerable walls and ceiling within the property due to an atmospheric imbalance and temperature differentials.
