Thermal Imaging Image Gallery

A selection of thermal images taken during our surveys on properties throughout North Yorkshire. A thermal scan of the building can often reveal hidden anomalies and aid diagnosis in identifying the correct cause of the problem both quickly and accurately. Our surveyors are experienced and trained for thermogrpahy inspections and use the latest most advanced thermal imaging cameras.

  • Thermal imaging roof surveys used to identify issues with absent insulation  and heat loss. 
  • Thermal imaging roof surveys used to identify issues with absent insulation and water ingress. 
  • This thermal image of a property in York shows a clear thermal anomaly within the wall. This irregularity prompted our surveyors to look within the cavity using a optical borroscope which revealed the retro-fit cavity wall insulation had been either missed or had settled within this region. 
  • Thermal imaging combined with atmospheric monitoring allows us to programme and establish the area’s most at risk of condensate and mould issues when establishing the dew point temperature. Here you can see the ceiling and window reveals of this bay window which are within the region of the dew point temperature and are highlighted in the greyscale image in blue.
  • Cold ceilings caused by the absence of insulation and cold air intrusion providing ventilation into the roof space makes the ceilings vulnerable to mould issues.
  • Cold eve ceilings within this detached dormer bungalow. The absence of insulation makes these areas at risk of condensate and mould issues.
  • This is a thermal image taken of a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system installed into the first floor landing ceiling of a property which had previously been suffering with issues of condensation.  The Positive Input Ventilation system is designed to filter air from the loft space of the building into the property through a diffuser and G4 filter which distils the stale air within the property forcing it out through natural ventilation sources and creating valuable air exchanges. The results are noticeably better atmospheric conditions and a lesser risk of issues with condensation.  The images shows the cooler air from within the loft space being distributed by the diffuser on the ceiling.

The results are noticeably better atmospheric conditions and a lesser risk of issues with condensation.  The images shows the cooler air from ouside being distributed by the diffuser.
  • Cold air intrusion, the darker area of the eves ceilings in this image shows a clear difference in temperature between the eve and the main ceiling area, which is caused by cold air intrusion. The roof space is often ventilated via the soffits allowing air to migrate into the roof through louvered vents in the soffit. Often insulation within the roof is withdrawn from the eves as too not compromise the incoming air and ventilation, as a consequence however the result is a warm ceiling with a cold perimeter adjacent the eve as is clearly shown in this image. The significant reduction in temperature makes the eve of the ceiling particularly vulnerable to condensation and mould issues, very common in properties with eve ceilings which protrude into the first floor rooms below where often there is little or no insulation at all.
  • Detail and changes in a buildings construction are clearly visible during a thermal imaging survey. In this scenario the side wall of this room was problematic with surface moisture (condensation) and mould which the owner of the property was having difficulty in understanding why? A thermal survey clearly identifies the change in temperature along the length of the wall as the wall changes from 100mm internal masonry to cavity masonry where the wall becomes external within the porch. The change in temperature is the reason the wall is so susceptible to condensate and mould issues. Understanding the cause allows us to draft an effective repair specification.
  • Thermal image highlighting surfaces within this property which fell below the dew point temperature of the atmosphere. From analyising the atmospheric conditions during a survey we can establish the relative humidity, specific humidity, air temperature, thirst of the air and dew point temperature of the climate. The dew point is the temperature which water vapour will condense from the atmosphere as a liquid. Programming the dew point temperature into our thermal imaging camera allows us to quickly identify surfaces which fall below the dew point temperature, those surfaces which are most at risk of condensation and mould.    
  • This thermal image helped identify a leak from an en-suite shower located in the room above. The leak had only recently occurred and as such there was little spoiling or discolouration to the wall or ceiling finishes in the room below . Using thermogrpahy allowed us to quickly identify the source of the leak and establish what materials had been affected by the escape of water. This survey provided valuable information to the client allowing them to quickly isolate the leaking services minimising damage and saving both themselves and their insurers time and money. 
  • This is a thermal image of the first floor side elevation of a property in York which has a significant issue with condensation and mould noticed particularly at high level around the walls and ceilings. Cold air intrusion is part of the issues caused by cold air entering the roof via the soffits reducing the temperature of the eves ceilings although this building also has an issue with absent insulation within the cavity walls. The property has had cavity wall insulation installed previously although as the image clearly shows there is a distinct anomaly in the insulation which could be caused either by faulty installation of settlement of the insulation. 
  • This thermal image clearly highlights a temperature irregularity above the front elevation window of this property. The reduction in temperature had been caused by water damage from a defective gutter at the front elevation. The thermal image allowed us to accurately and clearly identify the section of wall affected by the leak.
